HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection)is a specification developed by Intel Corporation to protect digital entertainment content across the DVI interface. The HDCP specification provides a method for transmitting and receiving digital entertainment content to DVI-compliant digital displays. The HDCP specification is proprietary and implementation of HDCP requires a license.

HDCP was first broken in 2001, prior to its adoption in any commercial product. Scott Crosby of CMU authored a paper with Ian Goldberg, Robert Johnson, Dawn Song, and David Wagner entitled A Cryptanalysis of the High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection System. This paper was presented at ACM-CCS8 DRM WORKSHOP on November 5th, 2001.

DVI is an acronym that stands for Device Independent Format, the native output format of TeX.

The same acronym, and expansion, was used by the GEM (and earlier GKS) systems as their graphics output format.

DVI also is an acronym for Digital Video Interface. DVI is a new form of video connector made to maximize the quality of flat panel LCD monitors and high-end video graphics cards.

Existing standards, such as VGA, are analog, as are the monitors they are plugged in to. However LCD monitors and plasma screens use a digital signal. Using VGA cabling results in the computer signal being converted from the internal digital format to analog on the VGA cable, then back to digital in the monitor for display. David Katzmaier over at CNet has reviewed the new Samsung LN-T4665F LCD TV and has stated it as the best LCD they have tested so far. The flat-panel LCD TV managed to fetch 8.3 points out of 10. Except the downside that the edges are a little brighter than the middle in dark areas, the Samsung LN-T4665F LCD scored well in all other categories.

The LCD TV’s 1080p native resolution, gorgeous make, inclusion of HDMI 1.3-compatible inputs, outstanding picture controls, and an appreciable range of aspect ratio controls impressed the reviewers. They claim the Samsung LN-T4665F to be the best-performing LCD-based HDTV they have ever tested in a darkened room.
